HFC-404A: the workhorse of commercial refrigeration
One such substance includes a refrigerant HFC-404A, a blend of three common hydrofluorocarbons (HFC(s)) in specific proportions: 44% R125/pentafluoroethane, 52% R143a/trifluoroethane and 4% R134a/tetrafluoroethane.
You’ll generally encounter it as a squished liquid in a cylinder, but at room temperature and pressure, it assumes the shape of a clear, odorless gas. So, what is HFC-404A particularly good for? It is primarily used in contemporary commercial refrigeration systems operating at medium to low temperatures, including supermarket foyer freezers, cold storage and vehicle refrigeration units. And it’s also frequently chosen for use with older systems being updated.
1. Main facts about HFC-404A
HFC-404A is a blend of 44% R125, 52% R143a and 4% R134a and is an HFC. It possesses the following main characteristics:
Environmental performance: The ODP is 0 and no damage to the ozone layer, but GWP of 3943 (Some data source showed 388) is a high GWP refrigerant.
Thermal advantages:With low boiling point of 46.1°C, critical temperature of 72.4°C, it is applicable to moderate and lower temperatures in a range of -45°C to +15°C, with cooling output and efficiency equivalent to the now banned R502.
Safe: ASHRAE A1 safety class (non-poisonous, non-flammable), can be directly used in densely populated areas such as supermarkets, food workshops.
2.The irreplaceability of HFC-404A: the main force of commercial refrigeration
Despite environmental controversy, HFC-404A is still the preferred working fluid for refrigeration equipment in many fields:
Core of medium and low temperature equipment: Widely used in supermarket display cabinets, refrigerated trucks, ice machines, industrial cold storage and food processing units, especially suitable for scenes requiring low temperatures below -30°C.
Benchmark for replacing old refrigerants: As an ideal replacement for R502 and R22, its physical properties are highly compatible with old systems, and only the lubricant needs to be replaced during the transformation (POE polyol ester oil is required).
Standard for transport refrigeration: Refrigerated containers, ship cold storage and other transportation equipment rely on its rapid cooling ability, and its penetration rate in global cold chain logistics exceeds 60%.
3. Market dynamics: Quota tightening drives HFC-404A price to rise
In 2025, the refrigerant industry entered the second year of quota management, and the contradiction between HFC-404A supply and demand became prominent:
High price sideways: In February 2025, the ex-factory price of bulk water in the East China market reached 43,500-44,500 yuan/ton. Affected by the price increase of raw materials R143a and R125, the monthly increase reached 1,000-2,000 yuan/ton.
Supply-side contraction: The operating load of leading enterprises is only 60%, mainly delivering previous orders, and the spot market controls the quantity and is reluctant to sell.
Foreign trade demand pulls: After the export license was issued, the progress of overseas orders to digest the quota exceeded expectations, and the price difference between domestic and foreign trade gradually disappeared.
Kaiyuan Securities report pointed out: In 2025, HFCs refrigerants will usher in a “double-click main rising wave” market, and the annual increase of R404A and other varieties may exceed 30%.
4. Challenges under environmental regulations
Facing the reduction requirements of HFCs in the Kigali Amendment, the transformation of HFC-404A has been put on the agenda:
GWP high pressure policy: EU F-Gas regulations require that the GWP limit of commercial refrigeration in 2030 is <150. At present, the GWP of R404A is seriously exceeded by 3943.
Low-carbon alternatives: Chemours Opteon™ XP40 (R-449A, GWP 1282) and XP44 (R-452A, GWP 2140) have become mainstream alternatives, with a 10% increase in energy efficiency and compatibility with existing equipment.
Technology reserves of Chinese enterprises: Juhua Co., Ltd., Sinochem Group and others are accelerating the development of fourth-generation refrigerants such as R454C (GWP 146), but in the short term, they are still transitioning to mixed low-GWP products.
Conclusion
Let’s be real—HFC-404A is still the king of commercial refrigeration. It just works, especially when you need those super-chilly temps and don’t wanna rip out your whole system. But, yeah, its sky-high GWP is basically a big middle finger to anyone who cares about the climate. The world’s yelling, “Cut those emissions!” and the industry’s scrambling to catch up.
For now? Prices are gonna stay wild, mostly because quotas keep shrinking. Down the line, though, it’s all about getting smarter with tech—think better equipment, slicker upgrades. That’s the only way we’ll crawl out of this mess: step by step, making stuff greener and less power-hungry. No quick fixes, just a long, awkward transition. Welcome to the future, I guess.
Tips for industry turning points: The EU plans to cut HFCs quotas by another 40% in 2025. China’s HFC production license approval is becoming stricter. Companies that plan for alternatives in advance will win a strategic window period.
