HFC-32 to drive the green refrigeration revolution

The refrigerant industry is undergoing disruptive changes, driven by the dual goals of global climate governance and carbon neutrality. HFC-32 (difluoromethane), a new generation of environmentally friendly refrigerants, has become the core choice to replace traditional highly polluting refrigerants due to its zero ODP, low GWP, and high efficiency.

This article systematically analyzes how HFC-32 reshapes the refrigeration industry in six dimensions: environmental performance, energy efficiency advantages, policies and regulations, technological innovation, application practice, and safety. It also provides a scientific path for sustainable development.

HFC-32: the dual guardian of ozone and climate

The environmental value of HFC-32 is reflected in its zero ozone destruction (ODP=0) and low greenhouse effect (GWP=675). Compared with R-410A (GWP=2090) and R-22 (GWP=1810), its greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by about 70%.

International research shows that if HFC-32 is fully adopted in air-conditioning equipment worldwide, carbon dioxide equivalent emissions can be reduced by more than 1 billion tons per year, equivalent to the annual emissions of 250 million fuel vehicles. This data confirms the scientific basis for the Kigali Amendment to list it as a priority alternative.

How HFC-32 Promotes Energy Saving and Cost Reduction

The energy efficiency performance of HFC-32 far exceeds that of traditional refrigerants. Experiments show that its theoretical cycle cooling capacity is 12.6% higher than that of R-410A, and its comprehensive energy efficiency is improved by 4.3%. Taking household air conditioners as an example, the APF (annual energy consumption efficiency) can reach 7.0, which saves about 15% of electricity compared with similar R-410A models.

The case of Japan’s Daikin Company shows that air conditioning equipment using HFC-32 can reduce electricity bills by more than $1,600 within a ten-year life cycle. This energy efficiency advantage reduces user costs and helps countries achieve energy consumption intensity control goals.

HFC-32 popularization under global action

Internationally, the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol requires an 85% reduction in HFCs use by 2036. China’s “National Plan (2024-2030)” clearly states that the production of household air conditioners using R410A as a refrigerant will be banned in 2026, and high GWP refrigerants will be completely eliminated in 2030.

The European Union has restricted HFCs’ quotas through the F-Gas regulations, promoting HFC-32 as the mainstream choice. Under policy pressure, more than 100 countries around the world have deployed HFC-32 air conditioning production lines, with cumulative sales exceeding 140 million units.

Technological innovation: patent opening and industrial collaboration

In order to accelerate the application of HFC-32, industry leaders are actively opening up technical barriers. Japan’s Daikin Company has made more than 300 HFC-32 patents available for free, covering compressor design, system optimization, and safety control technology.

China Juhua Group led the drafting of the Zhejiang standard for “Industrial Difluoromethane”, promoting production capacity to 30% of the global share. In terms of industry-university-research cooperation, the HFC-32 ultra-high-efficiency compressor jointly developed by Tsinghua University and Gree Electric has an energy efficiency ratio of over 4.0 and was rated as an “internationally leading” technology.

Application Practice: Comprehensive Penetration from Household Air Conditioners to Industrial Cold Chain

HFC-32 has covered multiple scenarios:

  1. Household Field: 70% of newly installed air conditioners in China use HFC-32, and the market share has increased by 55% compared with 2020.
  2. Commercial Refrigeration: European supermarket freezer systems use HFC-32 and CO2 cascade technology to reduce energy consumption by 30%.
  3. Industrial Application: In cold chain logistics, the HFC-32 and ammonia cascade system can stabilize the cold storage temperature at -50℃, and the GWP value is 80% lower than the traditional solution. These cases prove its technical maturity and scenario adaptability.

Safety Challenges and Responses: Scientific Control of Flammable Risks

Although HFC-32 is a micro-flammable substance (lower flammability limit LFL=13.3%), triple protection can ensure safety:

  1. System design: Use anti-leakage valves, flame retardant materials, and concentration sensors to control the probability of explosion to one in ten billion.
  2. Standard Specifications: ISO 5149-2014 requires the installation of environmental ventilation equipment to ensure that the concentration is less than 25% of LFL during leakage;
  3. Operation and Maintenance Management: ASHRAE 34-2019 in the United States lists HFC-32 as a 2L low-flammable substance, allowing safe use in residential scenarios. Practice has shown that its risks are controllable under standardized operation, and no related accidents have been reported in Japan for ten years.

Conclusion

Promoting HFC-32 is not only a technological iteration but also an inevitable choice for global climate governance. Its environmental protection, energy efficiency, and policy compatibility make it the core transition solution during the refrigerant transition period.

With the breakthrough of natural working fluid (such as CO2, propane) technology, HFC-32 may be combined with carbon capture technology to further reduce the carbon footprint of the entire life cycle.

To accelerate the global refrigeration industry’s green upgrade, it is recommended that the industry strengthen standard coordination, improve the recycling system, and share practices through platforms.
