HFC-152a Applications and Relevant Things
HFC-152a is also known as difluoroethane, with a chemical formula of C2H4F2 and a molecular weight of 66.05. It is a colorless gas that is insoluble in water but soluble in alcohol and ether solvents. Its boiling point is -24.7℃, and it has low toxicity and flammability.
Since the physicochemical properties of difluoroethane are similar to those of CFC-12, it is widely used as a substitute for CFC-12, especially in small refrigeration appliances such as refrigerators and freezers. In addition, difluoroethane is also used in vehicle air conditioning, and the demand is increasing.
HFC-152a Chemical stability
HFC-152a is stable and flammable at room temperature and pressure; it decomposes when exposed to open flames or hot metal surfaces, releasing HF and carbonyl fluoride. HFC-152a is incompatible with alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, and metal powders such as Al, Zn, and Be; no polymerization reaction occurs.
HFC-152a Production
The production technology of HFC-152a (1,1 difluoroethane) was developed early and has now formed a certain production scale. It is mainly used as a component of mixed refrigerants. The production methods can be divided into the following three types according to the raw materials:
- 1) Liquid phase fluorination method using vinyl chloride as a raw material;
- 2) Liquid phase fluorination method using dichloroethane as a raw material;
- 3) Gas phase fluorination method using acetylene as raw material.
Currently, the more common method is the liquid phase fluorination method using vinyl chloride as raw material.
HFC-152a Uses
The main uses of HFC-152a include refrigerants, foaming agents, spray propellants, cleaning solvents, organic synthesis intermediates, and as an important raw material for the preparation of vinyl fluoride and vinylidene fluoride. In addition, it can also be used as aircraft propellants and aerosol dispersants.
HFC-152a Storage method
HFC-152a storage precautions store in a cool, ventilated warehouse dedicated to flammable gases. Keep away from fire and heat sources. The storage temperature should not exceed 30℃. It should be stored separately from oxidants, active metal powders, etc., and should not be mixed. Use explosion-proof lighting and ventilation facilities. It is prohibited to use mechanical equipment and tools that are prone to sparks. The storage area should be equipped with leakage emergency treatment equipment
HFC-152a Leakage treatment
- Quickly evacuate the personnel in the leakage-contaminated area to the upwind area, isolate it, and strictly restrict entry and exit.
- Cut off the fire source. It is recommended that emergency treatment personnel wear self-contained positive-pressure respirators and fire protection clothing.
- Cut off the source of leakage as much as possible. Cover the sewers and other places near the leakage point with industrial covering layers or adsorbents/absorbents to prevent gas from entering.
- Reasonable ventilation accelerates diffusion. Spray water dilutes and dissolves. Build dikes or dig pits to accommodate the large amount of wastewater generated. If possible, use an exhaust fan to send the leaked gas to an open area or install appropriate nozzles to burn it. It can also be led to a furnace or a depression through a pipeline to burn it. Leaking containers should be properly handled and repaired and inspected before use.

1. Due to shipping fee, our MOQ usually are 1150 cylinders (13.6kg), especially for destinations farther away, like South America or Africa;
