10 Common Types of Refrigerant AC Units

A refrigerant AC unit usually refers to a complete air conditioning system, including a compressor, condenser, evaporator, and other components, used to regulate indoor temperature.

Ten types of refrigerant AC units:

1. Split refrigerant ac unit

A split refrigerant ac unit is an air conditioning system in which the indoor unit and outdoor unit of the air conditioning system are installed separately. Indoor units are generally installed on indoor walls or ceilings and are used to blow cold (or hot) air into the indoor space. The outdoor unit is installed outdoors and is used to discharge heat and perform cooling (or heating) cycles.

Split air conditioning units are composed of an indoor unit, an outdoor unit, and copper pipes and cables connecting the two. The indoor unit transmits the refrigerant to the outdoor unit through copper pipes, and the outdoor unit compresses the refrigerant and discharges heat through the compressor. Then, the refrigerant is returned to the indoor unit for circulation.

Split refrigerant AC unit is mainly used in homes, offices, and other places.

2. Air-cooled air circulation refrigerant AC unit

The outdoor unit of the air-cooled air circulation central air conditioner uses airflow to cool down or heat the refrigerant in the refrigeration pipeline. It sends the cooled or heated refrigerant to the indoor unit (duct unit) through the pipeline.

The machine sends the cooled (or heated) air into the air duct. It sends the cooled or heated air into each room or area through the air supply port (diffuser) in the air duct, thereby changing the indoor temperature and achieving cooling or heating. 

Air-cooled air circulation refrigerant AC unit is mainly used in large buildings, shopping malls, hotels, etc.

3. Multi-split refrigerant AC units

A multi-split refrigerant ac unit is an air conditioning system that connects multiple indoor units to one outdoor unit. It can provide independent temperature control for multiple rooms or areas at the same time, and each indoor unit can set the temperature and wind speed independently.

A multi-split air conditioning unit is composed of an indoor and outdoor unit, copper pipes connecting the two, and electronic control parts. The indoor unit transmits the refrigerant to the outdoor unit through copper pipes. The outdoor unit compresses the refrigerant, discharges heat through the compressor, and then distributes the refrigerant to each indoor unit for circulation.

Multi-split air conditioning units are mainly used in apartment buildings, office buildings, hotels, etc.

4. Air-cooled module unit

The air-cooled module unit is based on modular technology, uses air as the cold (hot) medium, and is an integrated central air-conditioning equipment with both cold (hot) sources.

It can be freely combined as an air-cooled hot and cold water unit.  It can both cool and heat, with common specifications of 65kw, 130kw, 150kw, and 210kw units.

5. Air-cooled/water-cooled screw chiller

The air-cooled screw chiller is a screw chiller that uses air cooling to dissipate heat. Compared with water-cooled screw chillers, it does not require an additional cooling water system but dissipates heat to the surrounding air through a built-in fan. In contrast, water-cooled screw chillers require an additional cooling water system and are water-cooled. Dissipates heat into cooling water.

Whether it is air-cooled or water-cooled, the working principle of the screw is the same. The refrigerant is compressed into a high-temperature and high-pressure gas through the screw compressor and then dissipates heat through the condenser to become a liquid.

Finally, the pressure is reduced through the expansion valve and enters the evaporator to absorb heat. The difference is that the condenser of the air-cooled screw chiller uses air cooling, which dissipates heat to the surrounding air through a built-in fan instead of water cooling.

Air-cooled/water-cooled screw chiller is generally used in medium and large buildings, commercial centers, factories.

6. Centrifugal water-cooled chiller

The centrifugal chiller belongs to vapor compression refrigeration. It is mainly composed of a centrifugal refrigeration compressor, evaporator, condenser, main motor, air extraction recovery device, lubrication system, control cabinet, and starting cabinet.

The principle of refrigeration is to apply energy to the refrigerant vapor through the compressor to increase its pressure and temperature and then change it to low pressure through the condensation and throttling processes.

The low-temperature refrigerant liquid evaporates into steam in the evaporator, and at the same time, it is evaporated from the surroundings. The environment (refrigerant, such as cold water) obtains heat to reduce the temperature of the refrigerant, thereby achieving the purpose of refrigeration.

This refrigerant ac unit is mainly used in large buildings, commercial centers.

7. Ground source heat pump unit

A ground-source heat pump unit is a device that uses underground geothermal energy for air conditioning and heating. It provides heating and cooling energy to regulate indoor temperature.

In winter, when the underground temperature is higher than the indoor temperature, the ground source heat pump unit absorbs heat energy through underground hot water or groundwater. Then, it transfers the heat energy to indoor heating.

In summer, when the underground temperature is lower than the indoor temperature, the ground source heat pump unit releases heat energy through underground hot water or groundwater to achieve indoor air conditioning.

This kind of unit is mainly used in residential, commercial buildings, etc.

8. Water source heat pump unit

A water source heat pump unit is a device that uses thermal energy in water for air conditioning and heating. It provides heating and cooling energy through the thermal energy in the water body, thereby adjusting the indoor temperature.

In winter, when the water temperature is higher than the indoor temperature, the water source heat pump unit absorbs heat energy through the water body and transfers it to indoor heating. In summer, when the water temperature is lower than the indoor temperature, the water source heat pump unit releases heat energy through the water body to achieve indoor air conditioning.

This type of unit is mainly used especially suitable for buildings near rivers, water, etc.

9. Steam LiBr absorption chiller

Steam LiBr absorption chiller is a device that uses steam and lithium bromide (LiBr) solution for absorption refrigeration, which is mainly used in industrial refrigeration, aerospace, etc.

The steam exchanges heat with the cold water through the evaporator, cooling the cold water, and at the same time, the steam is cooled and condensed into water. Then, the condensed water undergoes heat exchange with the lithium bromide solution through the condenser so that the lithium bromide solution absorbs water and forms a concentrated solution.

The concentrated solution undergoes heat exchange with steam again through the evaporator, causing the water in the lithium bromide solution to evaporate to form a dilute solution. The dilute solution undergoes heat exchange with cold water through the condenser to re-concentrate it, forming a cycle.

10. Direct-fired LiBr absorption chiller

A direct-fired LiBr absorption chiller is a device that uses direct-fired fuel (such as natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, etc.) to supply heat energy and absorbs moisture through a lithium bromide (LiBr) solution to achieve refrigeration.

The working principle of the direct-fired LiBr absorption chiller is similar to that of the traditional LiBr absorption chiller. It uses thermal energy to drive the lithium bromide solution to absorb moisture to achieve refrigeration. But direct-fired LiBr absorption chillers use direct-fired fuel as the heat source instead of traditional steam or electricity.
